What the Word Hypnosis Means
When spoken, the word is debated as curiosity often gives way to more questions. A person's background and experience with hypnosis can be influenced by many different factors. The word hypnosis refers to a state of consciousness in which people experience a very focused awareness of thoughts, feelings, images, and behaviors. Many people have found hypnosis to be a positive answer and solution to problems that may have once dominated their lives.
Common Misconceptions About Hypnosis
When hearing the word “hypnosis,” people often conjure images of someone on stage acting our silly suggestions, but true hypnosis and hypnotherapy has nothing to do with this type of scenario. Rather, during clinical hypnotherapy, a client and the certified hypnotherapist will work privately to achieve healing or behavioral changes. The following are some common misbeliefs about the practice of hypnotherapy:
- Being hypnotized is like being asleep. Hypnosis is a state of increased awareness in which a person is fully aware of what is going on around them. They hear everything and can open their eyes and see normally. It is not a state of unconsciousness like that associated with sleep.
- Hypnotherapy causes a person to act against their will or share secrets. Hypnotherapy is not mind control; in fact, it is quite the opposite as its goal is to help you gain more self-control. During hypnotherapy, a person is always aware or and in control of their actions.
- Hypnotherapy can bring about rapid changes. People often want immediate results, especially for goals like weight loss. But the reality is that achieving goals takes work. Hypnotherapy can certainly help achieve results like weight loss if a person will put in the work. Many times, we find that unwanted behaviors like overeating or smoking have a root in other conditions such as depression. When you seek hypnotherapy to help with the underlying condition, the outward behaviors and conditions are often corrected, too.
